If you need to write a fundraising letter and you are stuck for ideas how to passionately get your message across, then start with the following ten tips:

(1) Make sure you clearly and concisely explain the problem or cause as well as the opportunity you are asking them to invest in, to fix that problem.

(2) Explain to them in detail exactly how you will work for (or with) them to solve the problem you have described.

(3) Conversely, explain in detail the consequences of them not acting to help your cause.

(4) Make clear what they need to do to help out either financially or with their time (or both).

(5) Always write in a style that is both conversational and friendly, without being preachy or holier than thou, and try to engage the reader to your ideas and cause. Using clear and concise language, spell out your ‘offer’ precisely – a figure in dollars that you need from them to help improve the situation.

(6) Repeat this figure a number of times throughout the fundraising letter.

(7) Don’t write too much about the organization that is doing the work. People tend to assume that money is wasted on admin. Instead, concentrate your writing on the impact of the work on the lives of those people involved.

(8) When addressing the reader, talk to them as if they are someone who shares your passion for the cause and who shares your values and sense of decency.

(9) Convey a sense of urgency in your letter. This will almost certainly make a more persuasive argument to someone if they believe they need to ACT NOW.

(10) Apply similar principles to those used by a great many copywriters, including readable and concise sentences (regularly featuring bold and underlined words to help emphasize important phrases and statements) surrounded by a decent amount of white space and paragraphs of varying lengths.
