First steps to writing a fundraising letter

Easy Fundraising Ideas:

Fundraiser letters are very different from brochures and press releases. They are an attempt to reach people on a personal level and get them to join you in fighting for a cause through donations. For many, fundraiser letters are the only contact you will have with the public in an effort to raise money so you want to make sure your letter is professional and done correctly. Here are a few tips to help you in creating an effective letter that is sure to help you connect with potential donors.

1. Use “”I”" and “”You”" but MOSTLY “”YOU.”" Relax and imagine you are writing this letter to another individual or well-known acquaintance. Using these pronouns helps to engage the reader.

2. Focus on benefits, not needs. Explain what donating will do to benefit them. Focusing on you and your needs will disengage the reader and they’ll lose interest.

3. Ask for MONEY, not support. Be clear that you want their donation, not just their happy thoughts. You may want to repeat varied phrases of what you are looking for.

4. Don’t just write a letter. Be sure that your letter is sent as a multi-piece unit that includes an outer envelope, a reply envelope, a reply device, as well as the letter. The easier you make it on the donors, the more response you’ll get back.
